Responsible Urbanism Research Lab
The Responsible Urbanism Research Lab is Zayed University's transdisciplinary research platform dedicated to advance knowledge in the field of sustainable urbanism. It is a platform enabling researchers at Zayed University and key local and international partners to collaborate, exchange and disseminate research that advance our understanding of how to design urban environments in context.
Topics of inquiry range from healthy living, behavioral change and design for sustainability (for example design for disassembly and integrative processes including renewable energy).
It is understood that ecology, natural and human, needs not only to inform the design process but has a prominent role in shaping our cities. In order to reach an urbanism that is eco-logic, citizens no matter their background and social status need to take on their responsibility and act collectively towards supporting what is a common goal. Therefore, engagement as much as ecological considerations has a primordial place in the making of cities. Engagement can take many forms, from the interpretation of traditional forms of community conversations (such as the Majlis) and their integration into the planning process; the systematic use of social networking tools (Facebook and Twitter) to the simple act of 'wearing sustainability lenses' so to frame research and innovation in a way that it contributes to sustainability.
RURL is participating to the Abu Dhabi Global City Forum 2011. Researchers will be investigating how policy makers and industry leaders envision sustainable development. The team will be interviewing speakers and attendees (in-depth and open ended interviews) and formulate insights regarding the steps, challenges and opportunities to advance a common agenda.
